  • USA TODAY Co., Inc. has sued OpenAI in federal court in New York, seeking more than $250 million. The complaint alleges that hundreds of thousands of articles from 19 of its publications were copied without permission to train and operate OpenAI's models, and that ChatGPT-4 then repackages that reporting for users. One argument stands out. The publisher points to OpenAI's paid licensing deals with other news organisations as evidence that the company understood permission was required. That is the heart of the matter. A licensing market for journalism already exists. When some publishers are paid and others are not, the case for consistent, transparent licensing only grows stronger. Responsible innovation means AI developers know what they train on, disclose it and pay for it. The court will decide this case. The principle should not need a courtroom.

  • ARIAM recently held its inaugural event in Washington, DC. To mark the launch, ARIAM brought together industry leaders and policy makers for a thoughtful discussion on what it means to develop and deploy AI responsibly, and what practical steps are needed to build trust in increasingly capable AI systems. The conversation touched on accountability, transparency and consumer trust, including the importance of ensuring frontier AI models are responsible for how their products are developed and deployed. It is clear that the role of transparency and independent auditing are both crucial in any regulatory framework, as is the need for safeguards that work in practice, so that trust can be built into AI systems that are becoming more capable and increasingly integrated into everyday life. ARIAM was also pleased to welcome Sony Music Entertainment as ARIAM’s newest member during the week of this inaugural event. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the launch such a success. We look forward to continuing these conversations and bringing together perspectives from across the content, technology and policy communities to advance responsible AI development. #ARIAM #ResponsibleAI #AIpolicy #ConsumerTrust #AIAccountability #ResponsibleByDesign

  • We’re thrilled to welcome Sony Music Group to the Alliance for Responsible Innovation in the Arts & Media (ARIAM) - becoming the first music company to join our global coalition. Sony Music Group’s arrival marks an exciting expansion of ARIAM into music, bringing an important new voice to our growing cross-industry effort to advance responsible AI that protects creativity and consumers while supporting innovation. “Generative AI presents significant opportunities and challenges for artists and songwriters, which is why we are pleased to join ARIAM to help shape how it fits into the future of all corners of the creative industries,” said Kevin Kelleher, Chief Operating Officer, Sony Music Entertainment. “Only when developed in a responsible and ethical way that puts the value of human artistry at its heart, will AI have the potential to create an environment where innovation, creators, and consumers all thrive. Sony Music Group has an unwavering commitment to protecting music, and we see every day how art inspires, shapes culture and powers this industry and more. We wholeheartedly share ARIAM's view that a healthy licensing environment, where responsible AI companies proactively partner with rightsholders, is the only foundation for getting this right.” Victoria Furniss, CEO and Executive Director of ARIAM, said: “We’re very excited to welcome Sony Music Group as the first music company to join ARIAM. “The issues surrounding AI affect all parts of the creative community and music is an integral part of that conversation. Sony Music Group embodies our organization’s principles and brings a valuable perspective to our work as we look for ways to support innovation while protecting creativity, the people behind it and audiences.” Sony Music Group joins ARIAM members from across the creative, media and technology sectors as we work together to advance responsible, human-centered AI and practical policies that support innovation while protecting creativity and consumers. #ARIAM #SonyMusicGroup #responsibleAI #musicindustry #creativeindustries

I didn’t think there could be an increase in the volume of news breaking about AI. I was wrong.    The calls for change in the way AI is governed and regulated — from Pope Leo to Bill Gates and now of course Dario Amodei et al — have raised the stakes. King Charles is even convening a first of its kind meeting with AI companies in Scotland this week.  Now is the time for a grand conversation that includes a cross-section of companies, technical experts, concerned stakeholders, and policy makers to ensure that the growing adoption of responsibility-by-design principles by AI platforms is enshrined as table stakes for continued AI development.  This moment has pulled me back to first principles.  Surely we can all agree that the measure of technological progress should be whether it makes life more human. And making life more human means making life more creative. This is essentially Pope Leo's AI encyclical message. It’s not just about “producing content”. It’s tied to human experiences — joy, fear, judgement, and all that goes with being human. Innovation should be yoked to human creativity. That isn’t an argument against innovation. It’s an argument for human agency and creativity first. And regulations that harness that.  How we do that is the tricky part. With the right people in the room, solutions can be found. Now is the moment to put responsibility-by-design at the forefront of AI debates.  📷: Medium #ARIAM #responsibleAI
