MORE ABOUT BETH ORTON

British artist Beth Orton emerged in the 1990s with a distinctive, fresh fusion of folk and electronic elements that combined passion and beauty. Her sound was traditional folk filtered through an indie sensibility, while her electronic work carried the rhythmic pulse of trip-hop. She was a turn-of-the-millennium pioneer of "folktronica."

Her debut album, released only in Japan, was Superpinkymandy (1993); it was produced by the late William Orbit, with whom she continued to work. Other renowned collaborators from the musical zeitgeist with whom she has shared the studio include The Chemical Brothers, Andrew Weatherall, Red Snapper, and Ben Watt.

1996 saw the arrival of her second album, Trailer Park—a gem that dazzled audiences in the UK and Australia. Its success was cemented by its follow-up, Central Reservation (1999), which elevated her status by winning a BRIT Award, and Daybreaker (2002), which reached the UK Top 10 and the US Top 40.

From there, she achieved various milestones, ranging from collaborations with Bert Jansch to working with producers like Jim O’Rourke on Comfort Of Strangers (2006) and Tucker Martine on Sugaring Season—both LPs reaching the UK Top 30. More recently, her eighth album, Weather Alive (2022), garnered rave reviews for its blend of beats, synthesizers, and acoustic textures, all driven by a jazz quartet.
