What you should know before using AI to coach people
Despite the many advantages of using AI to elevate your coaching practice, there are some important guidelines to follow with regard to security and ethics. Here are a few ways you can safeguard your information while using this innovative technology. First, make sure you understand how the AI platform you use handles the information you enter. Data practices can vary by platform, account type, and organizational settings. Review the platform's privacy and data controls, and follow your company's policies before entering any work-related information. Ideally, your company has approved an enterprise AI tool and established clear guidelines for its use, but you should still follow your organization's security requirements. Second, be extremely diligent about maintaining the confidentiality of your data. When entering prompts, never include any personal information about the people you'll be coaching. You'll also want to avoid disclosing any of your company's private data. No intellectual property, specific financial details, or proprietary facts. The challenge is providing the platform enough information to make potential coaching scenarios meaningful, but remaining vague enough to minimize the risk. The final aspect of using AI to support your coaching practice involves the ethical considerations. At its core, coaching will always be about people connecting on a personal level to help spur an employee's growth and the development. There's no substitution for the human insights, observation, and judgments that make coaching so powerful. Keeping that in mind is important. ChatGPT should always be seen as a supplemental tool, a way to expand your thinking, to generate new ideas for starting conversations, and to practice your coaching skills in an environment where your decisions in the moment don't yet have real world ramifications. With AI, we can use role play to compare several approaches and consider how each one might land with an actual employee. The point here is we can't rely on AI to coach for us, but we can significantly increase the pace of our own development as leaders when we use a platform like ChatGPT. If we're consistent about leading with our human side and are diligent about the security measures we employ, AI can play a supporting role that quickly elevates our impact on the people we coach.
